A Dindoshi sessions court has granted bail to a Goregaon youth against whom a woman had registered a complaint of cheating her financially after promising to marry her.

The youth Rajkumar Gupta had claimed in his plea that he was falsely implicated by the woman so as to compel him to marry her. His advocate told the court that he has been in custody after his arrest mid-last month and the police have already recovered gold jewellery (given by the woman) from him.

Additional Sessions Judge LS Chavan said in his order that it appears that the youth is involved in the crime and has been in custody since July 13. The court said that the gold jewellery has been recovered from him and therefore his custody is not required for further investigation. The apprehension of the prosecution that he may abscond if released can be taken care of by imposing conditions upon him, it said. The court also considered the pandemic situation and the need to decongest prisons while releasing him on bail.

As per the complaint registered by the woman, she had registered herself on a matrimonial site where they met. The duo had agreed to marry in May this year. She said in her complaint that Gupta asked her for Rs. 5 lakh to buy a flat in Delhi where they could live after marriage. She had refused initially, but he insisted, she had given him jewellery to mortgage, took loans and gave him the cash, all adding up to Rs. 4.20 lakh. Thereafter, he avoided her calls as well as repaying the money he took. She then lodged a complaint of cheating and criminal breach of trust against him.
