Mumbai: The carelessness with which a structural audit is conducted is one of the important reasons for such mishaps in Mumbai. Very often, the audit merely involves standing under the bridge and watching it!

This is the charge of none other than Vishakha Raut, Shiv Sena corporator and leader of the house in the BMC. The corporator has on numerous occasions raised an alarm in the Standing Committee and the house meeting of BMC regarding the dilapidated condition of the 100-year-old Tilak Bridge, which connects Dadar East and West. However, no action has been taken on the repair and restoration work.

The Sena leader blamed the auditors for their carelessness and negligence. “After repeated requests, the auditors and officials of the bridge department came with me to conduct the structural audit of Tilak Bridge. However, the audit meant standing under the bridge and watching it for two minutes,” said the corporator.

“I had thought the audit would involve checking the metal for fatigue, the general condition of the structure, the repairs that were required, and the strength of the bridge. But no inspection of this sort was undertaken while auditing the Tilak Bridge. The BMC has made a joke out of the structural audit process,” said Raut.  Repeated demands were made for repair and restoration of Tilak Bridge but the BMC has not paid any heed to this demand.
