Bhayandar: The Thane unit of the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested two people including a crorepati municipal corporator for demanding a bribe to shelter an illegal construction in Kashimira on Monday night. The accused corporator who has been identified as Kamlesh Yashwant Bhoir (50) represents the Shiv Sena from ward number 15 in the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC).

Bhoir took the help of a local contractor Gorakhnath Thakur Sharma (48) to mediate and execute the bribe deal. The complainant in the case was adding a mezzanine floor to his tenement in the Munshi compound area of Kashimira, following which the accused corporator had allegedly demanded Rs 25,000 as bribe to refrain himself from getting the structure demolished by the MBMC.

After negotiations the amount was scaled down to Rs 10,000. The aggrieved registered a complaint with the ACB. Subsequently, a team led by Police Inspector Seema Aadnaik under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (ACB) Dr Mahesh Patil, swung into action and laid a trap in Kashimira at around 8:40 pm on Monday and arrested Gorakhnath while accepting the first installment on behalf of the corporator who has also landed behind bars.

Both have been booked under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, police said. Kamlesh Bhoir who hails from a rich and affluent family had declared assets worth crores while filling nomination papers for the civic polls in August-2017. However, less than three months after winning the elections he landed into trouble for his alleged involvement in the illegal construction of a three storied building in Mira Village which was later demolished by the civic administration. Interestingly, Kamlesh Bhoir’s brother Raju Bhoir and sister-in-law Bhavana Raju Bhoir are also Shiv Sena corporators in the MBMC. Raju Bhoir currently holds the leader of opposition post in the BJP-led MBMC.
