Mumbai: The Mumbai Crime Branch’s Anti Extortion Cell (AEC) on Friday registered another offence against Riyaz Bhati, who was already into its custody for fraudulently taking Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) honorary membership. Bhati is a close aide of the underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim. According to the AEC, cable operator from Malad has registered an offence against Bhati of cheating and forgery.
The complainant cable operator satted Bhati took Rs18 lakh from him and assured him of a flat. Bhati even gave him the allotment letter, which turn out to be fake. After the cable operator’s complaint, the AEC registered an offence against Bhati under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for cheating (420), forgery (465), forgery of valuable security (467), forgery for the purpose of cheating (468) and using as genuine a forged document (471). Bhati is in the police custody till July 8. On Sunday, Bhati was arrested by the AEC from his Versova house after the Wilson College trustee accused Bhati of cheating.
According to the complaint, Bhati used forged recommendation letter from the college for acquiring the MCA’s membership. Bhati has been enjoying the said membership since 2015. Recently, the trustee came to know about the fraud after which he approached the crime branch. Along with Bhati, the AEC has arrested a Navi Mumbai resident, Wasim Ansari, 42, for helping Bhati in forging documents and signature.
