Mumbai : After issuing notices to the Himachal Pradesh based manufacturer Torque Pharma and making a seizure of its fairness cream products which showed presence of steroids, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have sent samples of around 10 fairness creams companies whose products are being sold in the Indian market for analysis and testing to check whether the products contain steroids. The state FDA Commissioner stated that the results are expected in two weeks and following this, the agency will take a call on banning the products.
The FDA had seized two Torque Pharma products, ‘UB Fair for men’ and ‘No Scars cream for women’, which are advertised as beauty treatments but were found to cause skin rashes, itching and other reactions. Following this, the FDA has decided to take firm actions against other companies and one of the officials stated that products with presence of steroids or drugs need a proper prescription and cannot be sold off-the-counter at pharmacies.
FDA Commissioner Harshadeep Kamble, said, “We have sent samples of around 10 companies who sell fairness creams in the Indian market. We are going to check for presence of steroids, heavy metals in the product. Also, our other parameter is looking out for those products who claim that they are not using any kind of steroid or drug in their product but are found in the product. We are expecting the results in two weeks following which, we see whether to issue a notice or ban the product depending on the result.”
