Allopaths, ayurveda doctors lock horns over Pragya Singh Thakur’s ‘cancer treatment’ claim

Mumbai: Pragya Singh Thakur, the prime accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, has claimed she got rid of breast cancer after consuming ‘panchgavya’ (mixture of cow dung, urine, milk, curd and ghee). Thakur, who is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Lok Sabha candidate from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, informed a special court on Tuesday about the treatment she underwent to beat cancer.

Thakur has filed a reply to the plea filed by Nisar Bilal, the father of a boy who perished in the blasts. Bilal has urged the special court to restrain Thakur from contesting the parliamentary polls and instead, attend the trial. ,In her response, Thakur has claimed she was suffering from breast cancer prior to April 2017, the month she was granted a bail from the Bombay High Court on health grounds.

“I was operated at the Ram Manohar Lohia Medical Institute, Lucknow, for breast cancer and therefore, it cannot be said that I have lied about the disease,” Thakur’s reply states. “After my release from jail, I have been taking ayurvedic treatment at Bangalore, Lucknow and I am still continuing with it at Bhopal.

There has been a lot of improvement in my health but more is needed,” Thakur has claimed. Interestingly, in an interview with a TV channel, Thakur had claimed to have consumed ‘cow dung and urine’ along with other ‘ingredients’ and these had cured her breast cancer. Her claims have, however, been trashed by doctors, who have termed this as ‘illogical.’

“This is illogical and unscientific. Such a thing cannot help any cancer patient. There are so many other scientific treatments available, which sometimes, do not help patients. Such claims must not be believed,” said Dr Satish Shinde, a surgeon from Karad. Another allopath expressed a similar opinion. He said, “We believe in clinical trials and have not come across an instance wherein cancer is cured in this manner. Medical science does not believe in such claims.”

But Thakur’s claims do have some takers. “Cow dung and urine have anti-cancer elements. Consuming them works, but there is a procedure to be followed. The success of this treatment varies from patient to patient,” said Dr Bhushan Bhure from Nashik. It is scientifically proven, as it benefits cancer patients. I believe consuming these strengthens the immune system of a person. However, the treatment does not cure cancer totally, it stops it at a certain stage,” said Dr Rampratap Sharma.
