Mumbai : After the recent spell of untimely rains in the city, doctors have witnessed increase in the cases of cough, cold and respiratory ailments since the past two days. Doctors expressed that children and elderly are the worst hit category as their immunity system is weak which makes them vulnerable to getting such ailments.

Fluctuations in the climatic conditions and temperatures, changes in the pollution levels are creating a negative impact on people’s health, said doctors. Dr Shahid Bharmare, general physician at Kohinoor Hospital Kurla, said, “In the past two days, patients have turned up with respiratory infections and breathing pro-blems wherein those who are already having co-morbid factors such as chronic bronchitis and asthma are the worst sufferers of the lot.”

Doctors explain that those who have underlying lung diseases have a weak immunity system and therefore their body becomes vulnerable to falling prey to various infections and diseases. Dr Behram Pardiwala, consultant physician at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central said, “An environment of cold and heat with unseasonal rains and high pollution levels creates an atmosphere which is not tolerable for the children and elderly persons. Therefore, children and senior citizens find it difficult to breathe during such conditions and their health starts deteriorating. Out of 10 patients that came to us, two were serious cases who had to be provided with oxygen support.”

Doctors state that people need to look out for symptoms such as severe body ache, running nose, cough and cold, breathlessness which further leads to respiratory ailments. They further add that those including pregnant women, children and asthmatic patients should immediately get themselves tested as they are likely to develop complications as compared to other people. Health experts further state that it is crucial that people get vaccinated in order to increase immunity.
