Mumbai : Following the rise in cases and deaths of people owing to stroke attacks, the civic body had started a stroke unit in KEM hospital in October and now the same unit will operate in LTMGH Sion hospital, which will have a capacity of 10 beds. Similarly, the third largest civic-run BYL Nair hospital will also start operating the stroke unit by January 1.

The civic officers stated that the idea behind opening a stroke unit was to provide timely treatment to all the patients so that they diagnose the disease at the initial stage and provide immediate treatment. The stroke-unit offers life-saving injections, which are to be administered to the patients within four hours of the stroke. These injections are available at a cost of Rs 38,000 at the hospital.

Dr Suhasini Nagda, the BMC director of medical education, said, “Since KEM reports a high number of cases of stroke attacks, we started the unit first in KEM. But our aim was to operate the unit in all the three major civic hospitals. For the start, we have kept only a 10-bed facility because this is on an experimental basis.”
