Thane: Two people including a peon with the taxation department of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation who allegedly accepted bribes from vendors were arrested by the Thane Unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Sunday, ACB sources said here on Monday.

Deputy superintendent of police (Thane ACB) Anjali Andale stated in a release issued here today that they allegedly collected varying amounts from vendors ranging from Rs 15 to Rs 40. After regular complaints by vendors ACB officials laid a trap at the market on Sunday at about 11.30 am and nabbed the accused while they accepted an amount of Rs 30 from a vendor, which was over and above the fixed market fee. The ACB official identified the arrested peon as Rakesh Tribhuvan (25), and the other person as Datta, who was previously employed with a private agency which was given a contract to collect market fees by the municipal corporation. Allegedly, they collected thousands of rupees from more than 1,700 vendors at the Sunday market, which was more than the market fees, the ACB official said. Those arrested have been charged under Section 7, Section 12, Section 13(1)(D) and Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, the ACB official said.
