Bhayandar : A 32-year-old activist of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) landed into the custody of Navghar police on alleged charges of raping his 35-year-old female party colleague on several occasions in the past four months.

According to police information, the accused identified as Dharmendra Umashankar Singh (32), is an activist of the AAP unit in Mira Bhayandar. Dharmendra allegedly raped the married woman after inviting her to attend his birthday party at his apartment in Madhu Mohan building of Kharigaon in Bhayandar (east). Issuing threats of revealing their physical encounter to her husband, Dharmendra continued to sexually exploit the woman on several occasions for the past four months, police said.

Fearing social stigma and marital discord, the woman refrained from taking any action against the accused. However, unable to bear the trauma any further, the rape victim mustered courage and registered a complaint aga-inst the accused at Nav-ghar police station. Following this, a team led by Police Inspector (Cri-me) Suresh Gengne arrested Dharmendra on Monday and booked him under section 376 of the IPC. The accused has been remanded to police custody. Further investigation is on.
