Seventy More Positive Cases Recorded In The City

Mumbai  : The city reported its first swine flu case as well as death of a pregnant lady, taking the city’s death toll to 22. The deceased, a resident of Virar, was seven months-pregnant and was a known case of pulmonary Tuberculosis (TB) with nephrotic syndrome. She breathed her last in KEM Hospital owing to pre-eclampsia with status post-Caesarean section on Sunday. Meanwhile, the city reported 70 new swine flu cases on Tuesday, of which one is an out-station patient.

The 30-year-old woman was first admitted to Wadia Hospital on February 26 with flu-like symptoms. But she was subsequently shifted to KEM Hospital on March 2 when her condition started to deteriorate further.

“This is the first case and death of a pregnant lady. Her case was different from the other cases since she was pregnant and was a TB patient. Also, she was suffering from non-specific kidney disorder which turned the situation even difficult. Her co-morbid conditions worsened her state and she succumbed to the disease due to pre eclampsia,” said Dr Mangala Gomare, head of epidemiology cell at BMC.

Dr Avinash Supe, dean of KEM Hospital, said “Her swine flu was cured but she since she was TB patient her condition took a downhill. She had to be operated and it was a breech pregnancy. She had given birth to a still birth baby.”

Since January, Mumbai has recorded 1,041 swine flu cases. Out of this, 918 are reported as Mumbaikars and 123 as out-station patients. Of the total new swine flu cases, 24 are paediatrics and 45 are getting treated on out-patient department (OPD) basis. The rest who are admitted in various city hospitals are reported stable by the BMC’s health department.
