Mumbai : In a bid to curb the growing menace of bogus doctors in the city, The Economic Offences Unit (EOW) of the Mumbai police arrested five doctors for practicing medicine without valid recognition or medical degrees.
The EOW has been coming down heavily on those dispensing and practicing medicine with fake and unrecognised degrees. It has also formed teams consisting of police officers and medical practitioners to check the authenticity of their degrees.
On Wednesday, the EOW arrested five bogus doctors practicing in the suburban areas of Borivali and Malwani in Malad. They have been identified as Shivdhani Bansu Saroj, Harikesh Bhagwan Vishwakarma, Ram Akhpal Yadav, Raghunath Pulin Adhikari and Mulchand Manulal Shrivarte.
Officials investigating the case informed that Saroj, Vishwakarma and Yadav practiced in the Ganpat Patil Nagar area of Linking Road in Borivali (West) and Adikari and Shrivarte in Kurar village of Malad (East). According to sources, most of the bogus doctors choose to practice in slums and low income areas since residents tend not to question them or raise any suspicion.
“The five arrested did not have any valid degree recognised by the Maharashtra Medical Council. They also don’t have degrees issued by the Ayurvedic Medicine Board, Homeopathic nor the Allopathic Medicinal Council. They still dispensed medicines and ordered tests and treated patients without having proper degrees,” informed Pravin kumar Padwal, DCP, EOW. Those arrested have been booked under sections 419 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code and sections 33 and 36 of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act.
