Mumbai : After a lull over the past few years, the city is witnessing a rise in organ donation cases this year with 32 cadaver donations being registered so far. At 66 years of age, a brain-dead Mumbaikar gave a fresh lease of life to five people by donating his kidneys, liver and corneas on Tuesday. The kin of the senior citizen who donated his organs saved the lives of two young people who were suffering from end-stage liver and kidney failure.

The senior citizen was brought to Global Hospital on Sunday after he faced difficulties in breathing and blood circulation. Following this, his treatment was started. But, he suffered from a brain hemorrhage and breathed his last on Tuesday. The doctors at Global Hospital said that the patient had a history of hypertension, which led to the sudden stroke. They further added that the family was more than willing to donate the organs when they were explained about the importance of donation, which could save many lives.

Following the counseling session, the family gave a written consent for organ donation. Dr Sujata Nadar, a transplant coordinator at Global Hospital, said, “The liver has been donated to a 19-year-old man from Pune who was suffering from fulminant liver failure. He got admitted to Global Hospital a few days back to get a living donation as patients suffering from acute liver failure cannot wait for months and years to get a liver transplant. The patient was lucky as we got a cadaver donation at the right time before his surgery.”

Meanwhile, the donor’s kidneys went to two patients at Global Hospital and Bombay Hospital, who were suffering from end-stage kidney failure. “It is crucial that people are broad-minded about organ donations as the count of people on the waiting list as compared to donors is still high,” said a city-based transplant coordinator.
