Mumbai: In an interesting competition, 238 students from 13 engineering and architecture colleges comprising 52 teams, will be competing against one another to suggest plans for designing the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro station areas. Ramana R, the Executive Director (Planning) stated this competition has been organised after receiving a lot of requests from students and a non-governmental organisation. However, he said, “We already have a full-fledged plan. If any new ideas are introduced, then we would like to consider them. We want students to identify open spaces in station areas to provide solutions, which we will incorporate. The competition is a chance for us to know how to do things better.”

Also, the MMRCL indicated Metro 3 stations will have all differently-abled-friendly and gender neutral facilities. The authority has a broad framework for each metro station and accordingly the work is being carried out. Interestingly, the metro stations will be designed in a way to represent and provide a reflection of the Indian culture to impress the commuters.

Being built at a cost of Rs23,136 crore, the 33.5-km-long Metro-3 corridor is expected to ease travelling woes for Mumbaikars by connecting the island city to the western suburbs. The first phase of the corridor—from Aarey to Bandra-Kurla Complex—is likely to be made operational by 2021. The second phase is from BKC to Cuffe Parade. The MMRCL recently disclosed the project’s 23.69-km-long stretch of the 52-km-tunnelling work was over by March-end.

Tunnel ventilation: Contract awarded

Mumbai: Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Corporation Ltd (STEC), owned Blue Star company, has bagged the contract for the supply of Tunnel Ventilation System (TVS) and Environmental Control System (ECS) for the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro line 3 Phase-2. The contract was awarded recently, and the scope of work mainly involves design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the system, along with other associated work. MMRCL said only after obtaining clearance from the Japan International Co-operation Agency, which is funding the project, the contract has been awarded.

According to MMRCL, the TVS helps in lowering the air temperature during normal and choked conditions, inside the tunnel and also does smoke management in the tunnel during fire emergency. While the ECS supplies fresh air and cooling to the passengers, it could act as a great preventive measure especially at the time of emergency. Ashwini Bhide, MD, MMRCL, said, “We are committed to providing robust and technologically advanced tunnel ventilation and environmental control system.”
