2012-18: Fire killed 300, injured 1,045 in Mumbai

The city has witnessed rising fire incidents over the last few years. Due to various reasons, including negligence, rising temperatures in residential and commercial establishments, like hotels.

Mumbai: The city has witnessed rising fire incidents over the last few years. Due to various reasons, including negligence, rising temperatures in residential and commercial establishments, like hotels. In all the fire incidents, 300 people lost their lives and 1,045 were injured. Property losses were pegged at worth more than Rs68.46 crore.

From 2012 to 2018, the fire department received as many as 29,868 calls. Even after the quick movement, the fire personnel failed to save precious lives. Of the dead, 196 were men, 97 women and 7 were fire officials.

In 2012-13, of the 1,045 injured, 636 were men, 289 women and 120 were fire officials. Of them, 44 men and 18 women died and 131 men, 38 women and 13 fire fighters were injured. Property loss was pegged at Rs5.65 crore. The fire dept had received 4,756 calls. In the following year in 2013-14, over 4,400 fire calls were made, and 39 men and 19 women lost their lives. The number of injured were 87 men, 54 women and 29 fire officials. Property worth Rs11.77 crore was lost. In 2014-15, 4,842 calls were received by fire dept. Thess incidents claimed lives of 20 men and 12 women. The injured included 92 men, 33 women were. One fire officer had died while 31 were injured. Total loss of property was Rs12.11 crore.

In 2015-16, the fire dept received total 5,212 calls. 34 male and 13 female lives were lost, and 5 firemen had died. 91 males, 37 females and 23 fire fighters had sustained injuries. The property loss of Rs8.76 crore was reported. In 2016-17, the fire dept received 5,022 calls. Of them, 18 males, 16 females and 1 firemen had died. 83 males, 32 females and 13 firemen were injured. Rs22.95 crore worth of property was damaged. In 2017-18, total 4,927 fire calls were made. The incidents had killed 37 men and 18 women. 132 males, 87 females and 8 firemen had been injured. Property loss was worth Rs6.27 crore.
