Mumbai : Oncology training for 50 post and under-graduate medical students from municipal and state-run public hospitals kick-starts from May 11 at Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) in Parel. The 10-day oncology training course, which is taking place for the first time in the country focuses on teaching students the skills, right attitude and approach required for treating patients with cancer.
There is a huge load of cancer patients as compared to the few oncologists in the city. With TMH being one of the best hospitals for cancer, the burden of cancer patients is high on them. In order to reduce the load and to produce more qualified oncologists, TMH have come up with an oncology training programme, which will enhance students’ knowledge and will give them an insight in to the department.
The training will be conducted by 50 oncologists of TMH and four oncologists of King’s College London. Dr. Kailash Sharma, Medical Director of Academics at TMH said, “The 10-day course will be from morning to evening which will include lectures wherein the oncologists will train them and teach them the importance of prevention. They will also visit the department and get to know about the treatment in cancers.”
The training-course will be free of charge and at the end of the training; the students will also be presented with a certificate by TMH. “With the number of cancer patients surging with each passing day, we need more oncologists to meet the demands. Through this programme, we are giving the students an opportunity to understand the department and this way they can plan their future in oncology and come out as efficient oncologists,” added Sharma.
