Nagpur: For the last few days, high temperatures in the state have been causing great discomfort. Akola was one of the hottest cities in the state on April 27, when its temperature crossed 46.7 degrees Celsius. It is currently so hot in Akola that ‘solar’ cooking has taken a whole new meaning. Videos showing omelette and dosa being cooked in the blazing sun, without the use of gas stove or solar panels, have gone viral on internet.
Two friends and residents of Geeta Nagar Satyabhama Gawle and Varsha Pohle cooked a dosa in the sun at 11am on Monday. They spread out some batter in a pan and left it on their building terrace. When they checked on it after three hours, presto, it was a dosa!
In Amravati too, the situation is the same, except that temperatures have crossed 45 degrees Celsius. To keep their sunny sides up, people have been amusing themselves by trying out different experiments — like breaking an egg in a pan and leaving it on the porch of their home and coming back in ten minutes to find a sun-cooked omelette.
There are others who have tried cooking chappatis in the heat of the sun and have discovered it takes all of two minutes. Culinary experiments apart, residents are now taking care to remain within their homes, leaving only for urgent work and with good reason — the Indian Meteorological Bureau has issued an ‘orange alert’ for Vidarbha.
