Mumbai: Students appearing for summer semester examinations of Mumbai University (MU) can now cast their vote for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, as their examinations have been postponed. The university has postponed examinations scheduled to be held on April 22, 23, 24, 29 and 30, as the dates were clashing with elections.

A total of 550 examinations will be held, out of which 486 are final year while 64 are regular college examinations. The summer semester examinations are scheduled to be conducted from March 25 to June 10, 2019. According to the time-table declared by the MU, some examinations were scheduled on the dates when elections will be held in Mumbai and neighbouring districts.

With a view to allow students to be able to cast their vote and participate in the Lok Sabha elections, the MU has postponed the examinations. Vinod Malale, a senior officer managing examinations of MU, said, “We want students to exercise their right to vote and fulfil their duty as citizens of India.

Also, teachers involved in election duty will get free time if there are no examinations during polls. We have postponed the examinations which are clashing with phase 1 and phase 2 of elections for Maharashtra.”

Students claim they are relieved as they do not have to face the stress of travelling and appearing for examinations during election time. Sukanya Vilasrao, a student, said, “We are glad that the university has postponed our examinations, for we do not want to travel during election time.”

While Jayesh Vadepalli, another student, said, “Forget about voting, studying and appearing for examinations during election time is in itself quite stressful. We are glad our examinations have been postponed.” The revised time-table of summer semester examinations will be declared soon by the university. Also, the university has not declared the dates for examinations of engineering courses
