Mumbai: To avert the misuse of social media and to keep the electoral process technologically safe, a handbook has been published for election officials by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The handbook recommends standard practices and procedures for officials to follow.
Titled ‘Cyber Security: Best Practices’, the book was published last week and gives a brief description of how officials on election duty can identify and report suspicious emails, social media posts, fake news and websites and other such elements which could pose a threat to poll data. Cyberpolice have informed how official data should be password-protected and encrypted with a limited number of people having access to authorised systems.

Officials have been advised not to open unrecognised attachments unless these have been scanned first by an anti-virus software, and not access their emails from public WiFi networks and pay close attention to senders and recipients. Election officials have been advised to intensify vigilance on social media and monitor poll-related content.
