After facing a police complaint filed by the Election Commission (EC) for violating the model code of conduct, the Congress’ candidate for Mumbai South Milind Deora will now face a Rs 50 crore defamation suit filed by Shiv Sena.
According to Mid-Day, a Shiv Sena worker named Suraj Chavan has filed the affidavit on April 18, refuting the allegations made by Deora and claiming Deora had harmed Sena’s reputation. He also stated Deora made the statement despite knowing MNS was behind the act. This comes after Shiv Sena alleged Milind Deora had hurt the religious sentiments of the Jain community by ‘cooking meat’ outside a Jain temple during Paryushan. The Shiv Sena has filed the defamation suit in the metropolitan magistrate court and complained to the cyber crime cell and the city collector. Suraj Chavan, in his affidavit, has also demanded a compensation of Rs 50 crore.
The incident took place on April 4 at Zaveri Bazaar area when Milind Deora was campaigning, during which he appealed to the Jain community to not vote for Shiv Sena as the party had hurt their religious sentiments by claiming Sena workers had cooked meat outside Jain temples during Paryushan. But the fact was the Shiv Sena never committed that act and it was Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
