Mumbai: The Muslim voters expressed their discontent with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre. Prior to casting their votes on Monday, most of the voters shared their sentiments and stated that over the past five years, the government has only “made promises”, but did not delivered in most of them.

There were assurances of two crore employment opportunities in various sectors, but this remained a promise. It seems like they are promising again the same things in the ongoing election, but seems noncommittal.

Before coming to power in 2014, the government had talked of it, but failed to deliver on anything,” said Shahjabeen Khan, a self-employed voter in Mumbai. With the implementation of the Goods and Service Tax (GST) and demonetisation, micro businessmen are facing severe economic constraints.

Many stated that the country might have earned name for something or the other globally, it cannot be denied that it failed to address the problems of the lower middle class people and the minorities, as the leaders were interested in transforming India into a Hindu rashtra instead.

“They are hiding their failures behind the facade of extreme nationalistic ideals. What purpose will the religion serve if you sleep hungry every night,” asked Sheikh Sultan, a Mumbai serviceman.

In recent years, the Muslims have felt marginalised, as they are being discriminated in several employment sectors. There has been an environment of hatred being created against them by the ruling parties.  “This government is trying to spread hatred among people of different communities, using divide and rule policy,” said Arshad Khan, a businessman.

Though, during the Congress government, there was mudslinging due to scams, unlike the BJP,
they never made hollow promises, as the party is well-trained in white  collar crimes,” said Ehsaan Ali, an interior designer in the city.
