As the polling in Mumbai to take place on April 29, the political parties have intensified their poll campaigning. During one such campaign, Congress supporters allegedly man manhandled policemen and the Election Commission’s (EC) official videographer during Sanjay Nirupam’s campaign meeting earlier this month. The police have arrested two people in connection to the incident.

According to Mumbai Mirror, the accused have been identified as Kadarudin Mohammad and Nazir Khan. The incident took place on April 5, when a meeting was held in a banquet hall in Andheri, where Sanjay Nirupam was present. That is when the Congress supporters allegedly forced the EC videographer to delete the video recording of the meeting led by Nirupam. In the meeting, the EC officer and the complainant in the case, R Bhosale, along with police officials, were present during the meeting.

During the meeting no EC official videographer was present, so Bhosle called cameraman to record the meeting. When videographer came and started recording the meeting, the Congress supporters allegedly started manhandling the videographer and spread a rumour that he was inebriated. They also forced the videographer to delete the videos he had taken, and allegedly manhandled police constables present there.

After the incident, Bhosle lodged a complaint and acting on the complaint Amboli police registered an FIR against six persons. The police then initiated a probe during which it was found that few of the attendees had interfered in the government officials’ work while they were on duty, and also manhandled them. The police officials then traced both the accused and arrested them. A police officer told the leading daily, “Kadar was an organiser of the meeting Nirupam held with Muslim scholars and had not taken necessary permission for the meeting. Nazir was the one who manhandled the government officials.”
