Ahmedabad: Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) created a record in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state by bagging all the 26 Lok Sabha seats from the state for the second time in a row.

While party president Amit Shah surpassed the record of LK Advani in Gandhinagar by securing an overwhelming margin of 5.57 lakh votes, CR Patil, party candidate from Navsari in south Gujarat, made a personal record with a winning margin of over 6.8 lakh votes over his Congress rival Dharmeshbhai Patel.

Similarly, in Ahmedabad (East), BJP candidate Hasmukh Patel trounced his Congress rival Gitaben Patel by over four lakh votes. For the bulk of the BJP candidates, the win came with an overwhelming margin stretching from anywhere between one to three lakh votes.

For the Congress, among those who tasted defeats, were former union ministers Bharatsinh Solanki (Anand) in central Gujarat and Dr. Tushar Chaudhary (Bardoli) in south Gujarat. While Bharatsinh is the son of former Congress Chief Minister Madhavsinh Solanki, Tushar is the son of former Congress Chief Minister Amarsinh Chaudhary.

The complete whitewash by BJP in the state constitutes a major setback for the Congress, as it follows their creditable showing in the last Vidhan Sabha polls when it brought the ruling BJP down to less than a hundred seats, itself notching up 77 in a total of 182 seats.

It is also indicative of the overwhelming voter preference for a Modi-led government at the centre. Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani was upbeat at the results and said that the results proved the absence of any sort of communal conflict or sectarian friction as was being feared by some quarters.’

The entire credit for scripting this spectacular win goes to prime minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah. Paresh dhanani, leader of the Congress opposition in the Vidhan Sabha, who was himself a candidate for the Lok Sabha from Amreli, said that the loss will not defeat their morale. “I accept the mandate of the people and will get back to work with more vigour to ensure better results for the party”.

The BJP had bagged all the 26 seats in the 2014 general elections when as many as 64.7% voters exercised their franchise while polling percentage this time was 64.11%. Besides the Lok Sabha seats, the BJP has also bagged all the four Vidhan Sabha seats where by-elections were held alongside the Lok Sabha polls. The four seats are Dhrangadhra,Manavadar,Unjha and Jamnagar (rural).
