Eclectic. Electrifying. Edgy. Experimental. Say,  Ranveer Singh, and pop comes to mind — ‘unusual and crazily hatke fashion’. No wonder, he has been hailed as Bollywood’s king of quirk.  That’s right, this apocalyptic Simbaa superstar has been spotted in popping psychedelic pink abstract suits, flowing kilts and low-waisted skirts, neon hued lungis to curtain inspired pants… everything a filmi hero traditionally shouldn’t be wearing.

But does he care? Naah… In fact, he is not shy to thumb his nose at the ‘fashion traumatised naysayers’ and say, ‘Hey, I don’t give a damn what you think of my style statement, I’ll wear what I want’.

No wonder, this Gully Boy wears his bizarre ‘fash quirk’ king tag rather proudly on his sleeves. In fact recently, when trending memes went viral about chances of him wearing Deepika’s lehenga for their wedding, Ranveer very good-naturedly, retorted that he’d like the pink lehenga with hearts in that case. That’s right… the king of quirk also has a rocking sense of humour.

Fashion Passion

So what is his fashion sense all about? Does he just randomly pick ‘n’ match his outfits or is there a thought behind his eclectic wardrobe? Ranveer agrees, “I guess my fashion sense stands out and gets noticed as it’s not a thing that mainstream leading men have ever done — which is experiment with fashion choices to this degree — which is why I guess my fashion sense gets noticed and discussed a lot.”

Adding, “But to be honest, I’ve always been like this. In school, I got my hair cut in a mohawk, got both my ears pierced, got those temporary tattoos on both sides of my head. I wore baggy jeans in the 6th grade and people were like, ‘My God, his underwear shows yaar!’ I was the first one to put gel in the hair, to start wearing chunky silver jewellery and stuff like that. And they used to call me atrangi when I used to hang out with all the Bandra boys who are prototype of the Apha male and they used to find me to be an oddity or an atrangi. I used to go for inter-school football matches and they used to be like, ‘Eh tu match khelne aaya hai ke techno party mai aaya hai.’ So yes,  I’m very used to making these very ‘brave’ fashion choices. It was and is a part of my personality.”

So whether it is flaunting a (kilt) skirt for a press event, a trad meets boho ‘Alexander McQueen fused Rajput styled’ flowing skirt for a film premiere or an eclectic print on print pyjama suit ensemble at black tie event, our Padmaavat Khilji not only nails the look to the fullest but also carries it off with a lot of confidence.

Fave Fashion Elements

So what does he like in fashion? “I’ve always been attracted to edgy avant-garde style,” says Ranveer Singh. No wonder, Ranveer is often seen sporting his love for the fashion czar of kink, Manish Arora’s edgy ensembles — whether it is for his own wedding or a family function.

Nitasha Gaurav, Ranveer’s stylist when deconstructing his fashion sense claims, “Ranveer loves colour.  He is extremely flamboyant and confident as a person.”

According to her, he is not somebody who wants to conform or look for approval. “He wears what he is drawn to – whether it is print on print or anything bright and happy,” says she.

But love or hate him, Ranveer Singh with his free thinking liberal OTT “if you like it, wear it,” fashion sense has revolutionised (and, how!) the boring stiff fashion speak of Bollywood heroes. All hail this king of quirk.
