Shikha Jain explores what ruled the world of fashion through 2018

Ease and versatility ruled the fashion stakes this year. “The appeal lies in the easy of wear and versatility of the garment. Easy to wear and neutral colours ensure that these separates will be a wardrobe staple. Cold shoulder tops and blouses reigned supreme in 2018 but transitioned into off shouldered clothing which will definitely stay. Wide legged pants that are inspired by the ’80s made an appearance and are likely to stay in 2019 as well.

Corset tops and bustier blouses are paired with jeans, lehengas, shararas as well as layered onto other clothing by some fashionable risk takers. The main trend for 2018 is versatility of a garment, more than anything it’s about how often you can wear it and in how many ways,” says Krupa Kapadia, a fashion designer from Mumbai.

Florals for men were huge in 2018. Be it a koti or a T-shirt, menswear is undergoing a major change in colours. From beige and blues, men are now open to experimenting even if it’s with little accent colours like lavender, pink or yellow be it the print or a simple pocket square. Shimmer and sequins have been a huge trend in 2018 especially in the A/W season with everyone incorporating shine in their ensemble.

“I feel shimmer will definitely continue in 2019 because glitter is the way to go. For men, I think prints have been a trend throughout the year and will continue to the next year,” says Hema Kaul, a Dubai-based designer.

Starry show-stoppers
“Celebrities like Sonakshi Sinha and Parineeti Chopra have transformed and how in 2018. They have taken their style quotient several notches higher. Be it a red carpet look or promotions, all their looks have been on point. Their clothing choices have been so different from what they have been seen in and this fresh, new start will just get better,” says Krupa. One actress that has nailed wedding dressing is Alia Bhatt. From a bridesmaid to a wedding guest, we can take our pointers from her. “I love Jim Sarbh’s style. It has just the right amount of experimental and dapper. Vicky Kaushal is also someone who nails his look every time he steps out.

It’s amazing to see menswear evolve,” she adds. Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan have always made a statement. Deepika Padukone from Bollywood and Beyonce from the west also made amazing style and fashion decisions this year. “In men, I feel it’s obviously Ranveer Singh taking risks and making style statements,” says Hema.

Common factor
Co-ordinated outfits for the bride and groom are definitely going to be on every bride’s wedding board now. Just when you thought Bollywood’s power couples could not get any cuter, their wedding photos come out and make us go awwww! “Coordination is clearly everything. It’s not about standing out, it’s about the big picture. The decor, the centre pieces, the bride and the groom, they all must match,” says Krupa.

All the weddings saw a lot of extravagant lehengas, while men’s style was extravagant kurtas. We could draw a lot of inspiration from these weddings, like floral trends and prints. “At weddings the common factor was heavy jewellery. Everyone was seen wearing huge pieces of jewellery, like statement earrings and neck-pieces. Bralette blouses and big lehengas have been around along with shararas. For men, it was drapes and flare taking over the weddings,” points out Hema.

Chart-topping colours
The year was all about extremes – beiges and earthy tones were popular as well as reds and maroons. One colour that we just couldn’t let go off was yellow. Hoodies to lehengas, it’s been huge this year. “In India yellow is an auspicious colour and signifies optimism and good energy, so this one worked wonders. Some other colours that worked great for men and women have been lavender and millennial pink and of course navy blue,” says Krupa. “Silver was huge in 2018 and so was red. The next year is going to see a lot of neons being carried forward plus golden and yellow along with fruity shades,” predicts Hema.

Take-off looks
Gone are the days of everyone wearing boring jeans and tracks at the airport. The airport now has an imaginary red carpet giving celebrities one more chance to showcase their style, one more chance to reach out to their fans and show them yet another side of their lives… who would not seize it? From saris to coordinated head to toe looks and an often a denim on denim, the airport sees so much more of fashion now than it did five years ago. “Seeing how popular airport looks are, athleisure is definitely a blessing in disguise for our celebs. Let’s hope they enjoy dressing for the airport as much as we enjoy seeing them,” says Krupa.  Fashion now is more about how comfortable you feel wearing something because that’s when it will look good on you. Athleisure has been a huge trend and will continue being one,” says Hema.

New Year tip: Dress to kill
If there’s one night to go all out and dress your best, it’s New Year’s Eve. That doesn’t mean that you have to resort to an LBD or black tie. “Both men and women can count on rich jewel tones to keep it effortlessly classy. Women can pick a curve-hugging gown or flaunt your toned legs in dresses with shorter hems while sharply tailored blazers are fail-safe classics for men,” say the stylists at Pernia’s Pop-up Shop. One can revamp the old school LBD with flirty ruffle details. Don’t shy away from dollops of bling as this is the perfect time to flaunt them. Men can reprise layering with edgier cuts for a new spin. Sleek overalls, sheath dresses or even a crop-top and skirt co-ordinate could be one’s on-trend party saviour this season. From jewel tones to soft pastels, the season is all about experimenting. Men can pick unaligned jackets for an upbeat style streak. From jewel tones to soft pastels, you can experiment with whatever appeals to you.
