A Patiala House Court on Tuesday remanded AltNews co-founder Mohammed Zubair to 4-day police custody a day after he was arrested over one of his objectionable tweets which he posted in 2018.

Zubair was produced before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate after expiry of his one-day custodial interrogation.

Delhi Police sought a 5-day further remand of Zubair saying other FIRs also registered against him in different matters.

After Zubair's tweet, his followers on social media entities amplified and created a series of debates and hate mongering in the thread.

Earlier this month, a case against Zubair was registered under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, language etc.) and 295A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), K P S Malhotra, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Cell), said.

Opposition leaders, including former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government over Zubair's arrest.

However, Alt News co-founder Pratik Sinha alleged that Zubair was arrested in a case for which no notice was given by the police, which is mandatory under law for the sections under which he has been held.
