Inaugurating a green cell today
Thane: Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has planned to go green by planting around ten thousand trees on the occasion of World Environment Day to be celebrated on Sunday.
On Sunday, around 10,000 trees consisting of indigenous, medicinal, aromatic and flower bearing trees will be planted at Traffic Park in Kavesar area. The initiative has taken up by Sanjeev Jaiswal, TMC Commissioner, to increase the oxygen bank in Thane city.
“Due to urbanisation, there have been several developments in the city. This has resulted in reduction of oxygen bank. We are looking at increasing the urban forest in the city,” said ManishaPradhan, Pollution Control Officer, TMC.
TMC is also inaugurating a green cell on the occasion of World Environment Day. The green cell would consist of a team who would suggest environment protection measures to building residence. Before 2000, TMC had announced several measures like rainwater harvesting and using solar energy, however, there was no response by the residents.
“The team from green cell would personally visit the residents and guide them through several environment measures. Also, audits would be conducted in newer buildings under TMC area by the green cell to ensure the environment protection measures are taken by the residents”, added Pradhan.
TMC is taking help of Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) to undertake environment protection measures for buildings under TMC area.
