Mumbai : Members of the Brihunmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) education committee on Friday raised the issue of SRA developers taking over civic schools and forcing the schools to function in a single room premises. The members also alleged that the number of municipal schools have shut down drastically. The corporators who are members of the education committee have demanded that the officials take stern action against these developers.
The BMC spends crores of rupees to help BMC schools with latest teaching aids and technology. The BMC budget for schools is Rs 2394 crore of which Rs 8.71 for computer labs, Rs 9 crore for science labs and Rs 227 crore for upgradation.
Shivnath Darade, member of education committee said, “The Second October Vasahat School which was located in a slum area at Sewri has been taken over in the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme (SRA). Although, the SRA builder constructed temporary residential premises, he did not bother to build a school despite allocating a separate space for school. Later the builder shifted the school to seven rooms in the rehabilitation building itself.”
Hemangi Worlikar, chairperson of education committee has assured to conduct a detailed inquiry on this issue.
