‘Reel’ instigated ‘Real’ crimes

We have reached a stage in Bollywood where a lot of filmmakers are shifting gears towards biopics. However, ‘great thinkers’ have gone beyond the fictional scenario and re-created the dark zone portrayed in films. Have you heard the Miley Cyrus song, ‘If we were a movie…’? Astoundingly some individuals have choosen the other path of getting inspired by the crimes committed by characters in movies. We take a look at the ones which paved way for a director’s cut that came to reality as a crime.

Munna Bhai MBBS

The crime was inspired by the background of the film story to crack examinations by illegal means. A group of students in Delhi took the movie’s idea for real and went on to leaking 10+2 exam papers. They would further use mobile phones to text answers to those who filled their pockets. This deal was sealed by charging the students in lakhs with the idea of getting rich overnight. However, eventually this racket was busted by the Delhi Police.

Dhoom

The thrilling first instalment of the Dhoom franchise was an inspiration to the 2007 Chelembra Bank robbery that took the fame share in Kerala. The robbers made an exact replica of the film robbery which involved making a hole in the bank’s floor. They managed to steal gold and money worth Rs 8 crores. Apart from this there have been around 15 cases of the same inspired by Dhoom.

Special 26

The Akshay Kumar starrer Special 26 had a ‘special’ impact on a group of eight in Charkop, Mumbai who planned a masqueraded robbery posing themselves as Income Tax Officers. The team of robbers raided Jayanthibhai Sarvaiya’s house and got away with a bounty of more than Rs 1.5 crores. Surprisingly there are many more cases of crimes inspired by this movie which itself was based on a true story.

Khosla Ka Ghosla

This comic installation set grounds for a similar scenario in reality. A plot of land in Delhi was captured by DDA employees and resold by forging documents which created disputes between parties.

Keeping in mind the devious role played by Abhay Deol who casually drives away in a stolen car, was the spark that ignited the flame by large for real. The crime was committed by one Israr and histeam who stole around 180 cars in a year. They also used the best of material and technology to put their crime at rest which was provided by those who wanted them to steal cars.

Bombay to Goa

Behind most of the crimes inspired by movies, the idea is to get filthy rich overnight. This popular Amitabh Bachchan and Mehmood starrer gave rise to a trio of employees from a reputed MNC who planned to loot a warehouse safe. When caught, they claimed to have been inspired by the movie.
