Mumbai : In a setback to Bollywood actor Aditya Pancholi, the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Andheri has convicted him in a 12-year-old assault case and sentenced him to one-year simple imprisonment.

However, soon after the pronouncement of the sentence, the Magistrate immediately granted Pancholi bail.

The court also suspended Pancholi’s punishment for one year, giving him an opportunity to appeal before the Bombay High Court against the conviction.

The 51-year-old actor was convicted for assaulting his neighbour and was directed to be arrested for one year. The court also slapped Pancholi with a fine of Rs 20,000. However, when the order was pronounced, the actor’s counsel argued for bail and the Magistrate granted him bail with a bond of Rs 12,000.

The controversial actor was in 2005 booked by the Versova police for assaulting and punching his neighbour over a petty dispute over parking of vehicles.

At that time, Pancholi’s guest had allegedly parked his vehicle at the space earmarked for his neighbour at the Magnum Opus Apartments in Versova. When the neighbour objected, the actor attacked him.

The neighbour then alleged that he had suffered fractures and a bleeding nose. However, the actor had refuted the allegations, terming them as a ‘cooked up’ story.

Controversies galore
