Mumbai : Soon, you can browse the Net while travelling in BEST buses even if you don’t have internet facility on your mobile. The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport has mooted the idea of Wi-Fi services for commuters in buses and bus stations in the city. This new facility was proposed during a meeting held on Thursday, though committee members are yet to give a final nod. The plan is to install routers in 4,000 buses and at all 72 bus stations in the city.
The Wi-Fi service will also have an entertainment system which would play videos and music for commuters to enjoy during their journey. Fin Mobile Private Limited is the contractor that will install Wifi services in the buses and bus stations.
“We also have a feature in the router which would facilitate trending mobile application for the commuters to use while travelling in the buses,” said an official of Fin Mobile Private Limited. Information is also a part of the services. Commuters will get to know the arrival time of buses at halts through a Global Positioning System (GPS).
“We are looking forward to this new service as it will tell us about the location of the buses. There are times when we have to wait with no one to inform us about the delays,” said Neha Diwedi, a BEST commuter who travels from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) to Colaba frequently.
BEST will also lease out advertisement spaces to generate revenue. The aim is to mop up at least Rs 2.6 crore in three years.
