Man is what he believes — T.G.L. Iyer

JOHN STUART MILL once wrote: “One person with a belief is equal to a force of ninety-nine who have only interests.” Belief is a one-man-army which can break an impregnable wall, win a battle against a rag tag crowd without faith or conviction. Beliefs help us to tap our hidden potential deep within us, creating and directing them to support our desired outcomes. Beliefs are the maps and compasses which guide us to know and reach our destination.

When is the best time to start towards those goals that we have clearly defined? It is now. We make New Year resolutions or decisions. On doctors advice we take the medicines for sometime, go out to exercise, control our diet and after sometime say to ourselves: “A little indulgence will not cause any harm.” What is the point in saying “If only I had the chance” or “Why not tomorrow which is an auspicious day?” You may look back two decades and say “I had the chance but did not begin.”

We can build our life from now on. We can target rewarding activities in our routine daily life. If we stay focused, put distractions aside, set deadlines, make them specific and utilize our peak time, we can create a miracle; we can be an elephant, instead of an ant. Epictetus said: “First say to yourself what you would be and then what you have to do now, not later.” Buddha said: “Life is difficult”.

Life has its ups and downs. Through the valley alone you can climb the mountain. You can climb Everest only by stages, not in one go. Sometimes, there will be a storm and you have to halt. The storm clears and you begin the climb again.
