Panaji: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Thursday said that the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (grand alliance) was emerging in the country due to the anger of people against Prime Minister Narendra Modi who failed on all fronts.

Speaking to ANI, Chavan said: “Different coalitions are emerging in states because of the anger of people against Prime Minister Modi, who has failed on all accounts. His schemes like demonetisation have spelt disaster for the country’s economy.” The Mahagathbandhan is a proposed alliance of Opposition parties that would take on the ruling BJP government in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Further taking a swipe at the Prime Minister, Chavan asserted that under the NDA government, there were no jobs, farmers were committing suicides and no sector was flourishing. Talking about Triple Talaq, the former Maharashtra Chief Minister said that the law would be improvised under the Congress, if voted to power. He added that the current law has a “criminalisation element and aims at diving the society.” Chavan underlined that Goa would see mid-term polls, along with Lok Sabha elections, due to the “political instability” in the coastal state.

“Goa will see mid-term polls along with the Lok Sabha elections and the state legislative assembly will be dissolved because there is a lot of political instability here,” he said. Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is suffering from a pancreatic ailment and has been in and out of hospitals in Goa, Mumbai, Delhi and New York since February 2018. For long, the Congress has been demanding that it should be allowed to form the government in the state, claiming that Parrikar’s prolonged illness and inability to attend office was taking a toll on administration and governance.
