Our greatest asset is our mind. Palatial houses, cash, jewellery, security guards, electronic devices installed at home are not real assets.
The level of happiness and peace of mind are the greatest assets and that can be created only through right thinking, creating and preserving human qualities, which are not freely available. Also, remember that the most powerful gifts are intangible like a phone call from a friend, visit from a well-wisher when you are unwell or a basket of fruits from someone with a note wishing you a happy birthday. The intangible gift only says: “I really do care about you”.
Canadian writer Lucy Montgomery says: “I believe the richest and sweetest ways are not those in which anything splendid or wonderful or exciting happens. It is just those things that bring simple little pleasures like a kiss from a grandchild or a remark from a friend that can make you happy like pearls slipping out of a string.”
When we develop interest in life as we see it, in people, in things, in music, etc we derive small little pleasures and these small little pleasures build up into a big pleasure. The world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls and interesting people that we forget ourselves and only see beauty around. Each of us possesses an exquisite extraordinary gift, the opportunity to express the high human qualities through our everyday lives.
Our own life is the instrument with which we measure our spirit, quality and worthwhile existence. We have those instruments but don’t use them and god ultimately remarks when we return to him. “I gave you so much to use, spend and distribute, but I am disappointed that you have brought everything back intact.”
The Persian poet Omar Khayyam wrote: “Forget the day that has been cut off from my existence; disturb not thyself about tomorrow which has not yet come; rest not upon that which is no more; live happily one instant and throw not thy life to the winds.” The secret is to lift ourselves to the very roof instead of wallowing on the floor.
