As we continue exploring the vivid state of Rajasthan, Bikaner is another addition to its breathtaking attractions. The glorious palaces, forts and stunning temples add up to give fine piece of beauty. The architecture so fine, that the beauty has not lost its essence here. From art studded with gold, to walls that speak magical history, Bikaner is a haven for those who adore ancient goodness.

The city of Bikaner was established in 1488 by Rao Bika Ji, a Rajput prince. It is located in the northwest region of Rajasthan. In order to reach here, you can take flights from major cities to Jodhpur, which is the nearest airport (252 km). You can also take the rail route since Bikaner itself is a railhead.

The fort was constructed in the year 1593 by Raja Rai Singh who was the sixth ruler of Bikaner. Legend says that crocodiles were bred in the water moat surrounding the fort. Junagarh Fort represent sixteen successive generations of the rulers of Bikaner, starting from the end of the 16th century. The construction of this magnificent structure is a blend of Mughal, Gujarati and Rajput style of architecture. The fort has several gates, palaces, pavilions and temples. The gates are called, Karan Pol, Suraj Pol, Daulat Pol, Chand Pol, Fateh Pol, and Tripolia gate.

The Junagarh fort encompasses many palaces that showcase gorgeousness at its best.

It was built by Karan Singh in 1680 to mark his victory over the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. It is one of the most exquisite palaces built with lush gardens, beautifully carved balconies and a ravishing interior with intricate mirror patterns.

It is the oldest of the palaces which was built by Raja Rai Singh of Bikaner who ruled from 1571-1668.

A gigantic multi-storey structure served as the administrative headquarters of the kingdom. With commendable wooden ceilings of inlaid mirrors, Italian tiles and fine lattice windows, Anup Mahal is considered as one of the grandest construction.

It is known for its most luxurious rooms which include gold plated deities and paintings inlaid with precious stones. The royal bedroom has mirrors put up in a strategic manner, so that the king could see any intruder entering his room.

It was built in the 20th century by Ganga Singh who reigned for 56 years from 1887 to 1943. The Ganga Singh Museum is the highlight of this place which attracts many tourists. The museum has exhibits of war weaponry as well.

It is an extended part of Anup Mahal. The walls of this palace has many paintings which include Maharaja of Bikaner in different types of turbans, photos of people standing on nails, wood, swords and saws, and fresco paintings of the Hindu Lord Krishna and his consort Radha. The most astounding feature is the blue and white designing of the walls and ceiling which appear to be rain clouds.

And that ends the list of palaces at Junagarh Fort.

It was built between 1902 and 1926 in an Indo-Gothic style. The complex was designed by the British architect Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob. The three-storey complex is coated by red sandstone of the Thar Desert. Lalgarh Palace consists of drawing rooms, smoking rooms, guest suites, several grand halls, lounges, cupolas, pavilions, and a dining room which can seat 400 diners. The Karni Niwas is a wing here which has the darbar hall and an art deco indoor swimming pool.

A fine example of Rajasthani architecture is this palace situated on the banks of Gajner Lake. The palace has now been turned into a hotel. It holds the record of being the largest hotel in the world in terms of area. Spreading over 6000 acres, this giant red sandstone structure has won many hearts with its enormous beauty. Built by Maharaja Ganga Singhji, the palace attracted several dignitaries including the Prince of Wales, Governor General Lord Elgin, Lord Erwin, and Lord Mountbatten. They also house the Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary which consists of blue bulls, Indian hares, antelopes, deer, wild boars and many more animals. With excellent panoramic landscape and architectural beauty, Gajner Palace is a marvelous place to explore.

The temple was commissioned by Bhandasar Oswal in the year 1468 and completed in the year 1514. With excellent Rajputana architecture, it has a unique and intricate design, well sculpted pillars and a coat of red sandstone and white marble. The three-storied temple displays excellent mirror work which has an enchanting appeal.

The best way to explore Bikaner is the local way, and in order to do that you can opt for camel safaris. Going on a shopping spree and layering in the authentic Rajasthani avatar are the small things one can indulge here.
