Considered as the largest city of Rajasthan in terms of area, Kota stands as a colourful land, gifted with magnificent forts, palaces, and natural beauty. The city is a marvellous destination for those wanting to explore the state of Rajasthan to its core. It is a heavenly place to indulge in a blend of history and nature. Since it has a number of engineering and medical exam institutes, it has been nicknamed as the ‘Education city of India’.

In order to reach here you can take flights to Jaipur which is the nearest airport. Kota is well connected via trains if you wish to take the rail route. As we continue our Rajasthan diaries, we come across some of the tantalizing places, Kota has to offer.

The museum stands as a step taken by the city to preserve its cultural and architectural heritage. A trip to Kota is incomplete without a visit here. The museum displays an exquisite collection of sculptures, frescoes and murals. It also has an outstanding armoury section that showcases a variety of arms like swords, knives, bows and arrows, pistols, rifles etc. One of the main attractions of Maharao Madho Singh Museum at Kota is the huge collection of Rajput miniature paintings belonging to the Kota school of art.

It is located right beside the Maharao Madho Singh Museum; hence you don’t have to wander off afar. This place is a must visit for those who love to explore ancient architecture and skilled artistry.

The name is derived for being located at the bank of River Chambal. One of the most magical picnic spots in the city of Kota, the Chambal Garden is a favourite among tourists. With lush greenery and view of the fresh waters, the Chambal Garden is a haven for those seeking solitude. The most catching feature of the garden is its pond that is full of crocodiles. There is a shaky bridge to cross the pond that has been suspended at a low height to give you an up close experience with the reptiles.

The Haveli of Devtaji is a splendid palace that is celebrated for its major historical significance. The main characteristic of this place is that it has a large number of rooms and each wall of every room is decorated with gorgeous paintings. The paintings serve to be major attraction for visitors who wish to get a glimpse of the ancient glory of the land and its brave Rajput rulers.

The royal Jag Mandir rests on the placid waters of the Kishore Sagar. The enchanting view of a palace on waters is truly mesmerizing. The Jagmandir Palace was built by one of the queens of Kota in 1740. The lake though artificial, holds an amazing aura to attract tourists and indulge in its beauty. A boat trip through Kishore Sagar will lead you to Jag Mandir. The red sandstone palace has skilled architecture which serves as an inspiration to artists.

The museum is located in the Brijvilas Palace near Kishore Sagar. It portrays rich cultural heritage of the city. Kota museum has a rich collection of sculptures, rare coins and manuscripts.

It is yet another addition to the amazing list of wildlife sanctuaries in the state of Rajasthan. The Darrah Wildlife Sanctuary is located 50 km from the city. Earlier it was a hunting ground for the royals who engaged in the sport of hunting tigers and deer. Though most of the wildlife from this place has been depleted over the years, the region has great historic value and species of fauna that rule here. Spreading across 250 sq km, you can spot some amazing animals like sambhars, panthers, elephants, leopards, bears, wild boars, deer and antelopes.
