Dattu tops in Final C

Rower Dattu Baban Bhokanal on Saturday topped the Final C in men’s single sculls to finish 13th at the Rio Olympic Games here.

Already out of medal contention, Dattu topped the final ranking race in 6:54.96 minutes, which was best among the four races he participated in the Games. Bhokanal finished ahead of five other competitors — Bendeguz Molnar Petervari, Rosso Brian, Memo, Kim Dongyong and Jhonatan.

Mairaj, Gurpreet fail

Indian shooters’ dismal run in the Rio Olympics continued as Gurpreet Singh and Mairaj Ahmad Khan failed to progress to the finals of their respective events on Saturday. Gurpreet failed to make the final of men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol after finishing seventh in the qualification round, while Mairaj ended ninth after losing in a shoot-off in the Men’s Skeet event. As a rule, the top six are entitled to advance to the finals in both the events.

Jwala-Ashwini crash

Doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa lost their inconsequential Group A match against Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand to bow out of the Olympic Games here on Saturday. Already out of the quarterfinal race, Jwala and Ashwini lost 17-21, 15-21 against Puttita and Sapsiree. With this loss, the Indian pair ended the Group A campaign with three consecutive losses. The Thai pair managed a win but it was not enough to take them through.

Eves thrashed again

The Indian women’s hockey team suffered a humiliating 0-5 loss against higher-ranked Argentina in their final Pool B fixture to end their campaign at the Rio Olympics on Saturday.

Martina Cavallero (16th minute, 29th), Maria Granatto (23rd), Carla Rebecchi (26th) and Agustina Albertarrio (27th) scored for Argentina, while India drew a blank to slump to their fourth successive loss in the Rio Games at the Olympic hockey centre here. With this loss, India finished their six-team Pool B campaign.
