Chasing Bollywood’s ‘Biopic Trend’

Bollywood’s trend of emerging films based on real life characters is hitting the screens and doing tremendously well. Due to this a lot of filmmakers are adopting this feature in their new projects. It’s not like there haven’t been any biopic films made earlier. We have seen some remarkable movies like Gandhi, Mangal Pandey-The Rising, Provoked, No One Killed Jessica and many more. All of these have paved the way to represent their respective stories on a cinematic platform and shedding some light on people who have flagged themselves and yet have been forgotten. Let us take a look at some of the great biopic movies made in today’s time as well as the upcoming ones.

It is a sports drama based on the life of Milkha Singh, an Indian athlete who was a National Champion Runner and an Olympian. Farhan Akhtar pulled of the character in its true sense. The film also stars Sonam Kapoor, Meesha Shafi, and Divya Dutta in lead roles and is written by Prasoon Joshi and directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. The book titled ‘The Race of My Life’ written by Singh and his daughter Sonia Sanwalka inspired the making of such a fantastic movie.

Hailing from the beautiful land of Northeast India, eponymous boxer Mary Kom has a notable story to tell the world about her life through this biopic. The film was suggested by writer Saiwyn Quadras to director Omung Kumar in order to bring the story of this champion on a global platform. Starring Priyanka Chopra, Darshan Kumar and Sunil Thapa as her husband and coach respectively, Mary Kom was a nationwide hit.

Pan Singh Tomar was an Indian soldier, athlete, and a rebel. He served with great pride in the Indian Army and was a seven-time national steeplechase champion in the 1950s and 1960s. He also represented India at the 1958 Asian Games. However he later became a dacoit and was killed by the Indian law enforcement authorities. The film has been portrayed well by ace actor Irrfan Khan who carried the role flawlessly.

The film is a heart touching story based on the life of Dashrath Manjhi popularly known as the ‘Mountain Man’. He was a laborer who lost his wife on the Gehlour Hills when she slipped while crossing the hills getting him lunch. He carved a way using a hammer and chisel so that the village could have easier access to medical attention. The film stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte and is directed by Ketan Mehta.

The latest flick which caught attention of many is the thriller starring Akshay Kumar as Ranjit Katyal a Kuwait-based businessman who carried out biggest civil-operation in evacuating Indians based in Kuwait during the Iraq-Kuwait war.

Neerja is an upcoming biopic on the life of Neerja Bhanot who was an air hostess on a Pan Am Flight 73 and was shot dead by terrorists who hijacked the plane in 1986. She sacrificed herself saving lives of many and has been awarded the Ashoka Chakra award for immense bravery. The film stars Sonam Kapoor and is directed by Ram Madhavni, all set to release on February 19, 2016.

The most awaited biopic is based on one of the eminent captains of the Indian cricket team, Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The film tracks the journey of him being a star cricketer and winning World Cups, starring Sushant Singh Rajput as Dhoni himself and Kiara Advani as Sakshi Singh Dhoni. The film is directed by Neeraj Pandey and will be releasing on September 2, 2016.

The upcoming Aamir Khan starer is based on Mahavir Singh Phogat who taught wrestling to his daughters Geeta Phogat, first female wrestler to win gold at 2010 Commonwealth Games and Babita Kumar who won silver in the same. Dangal meaning wrestling revolves around this real life story directed by Nitesh Tiwari and is slated to release on December 23, 2016.

It is another addition to the upcoming biopic movies based on Sarabjit Singh who was an Indian national convicted of terrorism and spying in Pakistan. The film stars Randeep Hooda as Sarabjit along with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as his sister and Richa Chaddha as his wife. The film has not released its official details yet.
