Johannesburg : Australian controversial tennis stars Bernard Tomic and Nick Kyrgios have been advised to improve their behaviour in order to avoid facing a ban from the upcoming Rio Olympics. Earlier this week, Tomic had attracted a torrent of criticism when he gave up on the last point of his first-round match against Italian Fabio Fognini by holding his racquet the wrong way round at the Madrid Masters. He then aggravated the situation with his outspoken comments claiming he didn’t care about losing the point given the wealth he had earned already in his short career.
Describing the incident as ‘appalling’, Australia Olympics chef de mission Kitty Chiller said that such behaviour goes against the spirit of the Olympics, adding that she wouldn’t want any Olympian to behave in similar manner, Sport24 reported. Chiller confirmed that Tomic and Kyrgios are among the list of athletes who are under their watch as the AOC has the authority to approve or reject players nominated by the Tennis Australia.
Kyrgios is also not new to controversies considering his regular on-court spat with umpires, opponents and spectators. Tennis Australia has until late June to nominate its team for Rio.
