Abhishek Kulkarni stuns D’Sa to make semis

Mumbai : Abhishek Kulkarni caused a major upset by sending second seed Nigel D’Sa crashing to a 21-12, 21-18 defeat in a men’s singles quarter-final match of the 2nd Maharashtra Senior State Selection Badminton Tournament 2016 and played at the Goregaon Sports Club on Friday.

In other last eight round matches, Arijeet Bose prevailed over Likhit Bangera 21-14, 21-15 and Viplav Kuvale defeated Ameya Oak 22-20, 21-16 to join Kulkarni in the semi-finals. In women’s action, second seed Neha Pandit was in total control as she got past Riya Pillai 21-10, 21-18 in a quarter-final encounter. In another encounter, Revati Devasthale recovered from the loss of the opening game to get past Mudra Dhainje 11-21, 21-18, 21-17 to also advance to the semi-finals.

Results – Mixed doubles (QF): Satyajeet Jagdhane/Riya Arolkar bt Siddhesh Aroskar/Kareena Madan 21-9, 14-21, 21-8; Eshan Naqvi/Aishwarya Narayanmoorthy bt Apoorva Javadekar/Revati Devasthale 21-15, 21-13; Viplav Kuvale/Akshaya Warang bt Pauras Kulkarni/Mrunmayi Saoji 23-21, 21-17.

Women’s singles (QF): Shruti Mundada bt Mrunmayi Saoji 21-16, 21-17; Revati Devasthale bt Mudra Dhainje 11-21, 21-18, 21-17; 2-Neha Pandit bt Riya Pillai 21-10, 21-18; Mekhla Ambekar bt Nakshatra Hanchate 21-14, 21-12.

Men’s singles (QF): Arijeet Bose bt Likhit Bangera 21-14, 21-15; Viplav Kuvale bt Ameya Oak 22-20, 21-16; Abhishek Kulkarni bt 2-Nigel Dsa 21-12, 21-18.
