Ujjain : The bickering in the BJP-ruled Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC) escalated on Wednesday with Zone Committee-3 president Rajat Mehta tendering his ‘conditional’ resignation. On record, he tendered the resignation in protest against the administrative failure of the UMC, but whispers are doing the rounds that Mehta took this step on the behest of School Education Minister Paras Jain.UMC is in headlines since the Model Code of Conduct was lifted after the General Elections-2014. Not only the people, but even their elected representatives have also been staging demonstrations at various zonal committee offices and so also at the UMC headquarters. The bone of contention among the people at large was anomalies prevailed in the preparation of SSSM ID while the corporators have been peeved over the condition of roads and sanitary and water supply arrangements.

On Wednesday, BJP corporator from ward number 23 and Zone Committee-3 president Rajat Mehta along with several zone committee presidents and corporators reached at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Bhavan located UMC headquarters. After long discussions, he tendered his resignation to the Commissioner Vivek Kshotriya. In his resignation letter, he cited five reasons which included inconveniences caused to the people in making the SSSM ID, mismanagements in sanitation arrangements, non-repair of roads, encroachments and lack of hand pump facility.

Meanwhile, sources informed that Mehta tried to fulfill two purpose of him through the resignation drama, one to score political mileage and second to expose the administrative lapses. He knows it well that Commissioner has nothing to do with acceptance or non-acceptance of the resignation and only Speaker can take decision on it, yet he submitted his resignation to the former. Mehta is supposed to be a close relative of Minister Paras Jain, who reportedly keeps strong reservations against Commissioner Kshotriya and does not like to even talk to him.

According to sources, Mehta’s resignation remained talking point in the UMC circles. Mayor Rameshwar Akhand convened few meetings to know the exact cause of the resignation and its solution. Kshotriya also passed instructions to subordinates. No official reaction came from the BJP camp. On being contacted, Speaker Sonu Gehlot told Free Press that he has not received the resignation of Mehta as yet. He admitted that lack of staff and resources have created problems everywhere. “We will sit to resolve the matter and also to streamline the arrangements,” he said.
