Indore : A lady constable, who had approached her department head for relief from threatening husband, committed suicide by consuming poison in South Gadrakhedi area, on Wednesday.
The victim had lodged police complaints, including dowry harassment, against her husband, a Khandwa-based forest guard, but no action was taken on her pleas.
The matter came to fore after her death, as resentment among the staff of Mahila police station brewed, as they waited for the post-mortem to be performed at MY Hospital.
Archana Tomar, 32, was found in bad health by her neighbour in the afternoon. She told her neighbour that she had consumed poison. Archana was rushed to a hospital, where she died during treatment. A 2011 batch police constable, Archana was married to Ramsewak, some years ago.
In January last, Archana had lodged a complaint of dowry harassment against Ramsewak. She had been living separately at her brother Ram Singh’s residence since then.
Archana had approached Sadar Bazaar police station in-charge Mahendra Singh Bhadauria alleging that Ramsewak had been issuing her threats and harassing her.
She sought immediate police action to prevent mental and physical harassment she was put through. “My husband is forcing me to withdraw the dowry harassment case against him,” she said in the complaint to Bhaduria. Her colleagues claimed that Archana was frustrated that her complaint was not heeded to.
Getting no help, Archana approached DIG SK Singh and sought his intervention. Whether she met the DIG or gave a written plea, was not known.
DIG Singh told Free Press that he was not sure whether Archana had met him. “I have issued instructions to look into what was done on her complaint,” Singh said adding that if any laxity on part of the personnel was found, strict action would be taken.
Archana has not left behind any suicide note. Thus police claim that the exact reason for the suicide was not known yet. However, a case was registered and statements of her relatives were being recorded.
