Ujjain: 5 booked for violence after janpad result

In the first phase of three-tier panchayat elections, polling and counting were held in Ujjain and Barnagar janpad panchayats and the results of the counting of votes started coming in in the evening.

Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): There was a ruckus in the midst of the victory celebrations after the results of the Panchayat elections were declared here on late Saturday. In Palkhedi, the losing side argued with the people celebrating the victory and created a sensation by firing in the air and brandishing a knife. After the fight between the two sides, the police have registered a case against five persons along with some unnamed people.

In the first phase of three-tier panchayat elections, polling and counting were held in Ujjain and Barnagar janpad panchayats and the results of the counting of votes started coming in in the evening. In village Palkhedi of Chintaman police station area, the wife of Kamal Singh son of Ram Singh Anjana’s brother won the election. After the victory, the family started celebrating with drums being played. The losing side could not digest the loud noises made due to the celebrations and took objection to it Both the sides came face to face and a confrontation ensued leading to fights and firing in the air.

As soon as the Chintaman police reached the spot, the people ran away. Police station in-charge Jeevan Bhindor said that on the complaint of Kamal Singh, a case under Sections 307, 147, 148, 149, 323, 294, 506 and 34 of IPC has been registered against Ravi Anjana, Bahadur Anjana, Pankaj, Gopal, Dashrath resident Palkhedi and others. The police carried out a raid to apprehend the culprits but all of them escaped.

No transport arrangement for cops to return

The policemen of Ujjain, who were sent as security in the Panchayat elections, had to face a lot of trouble last night. They were sent by government vehicles but no arrangement was made for them to return to their headquarters. In the first phase of panchayat elections, hundreds of police forces were deployed in rural areas from all the police stations of Ujjain. The administration had made arrangements to take the policemen to the booths but vehicles were not available to bring them back. In such a situation, after doing duty till 2 o’clock in the night, many policemen kept waiting for vehicles at the bus stand and other places till morning leading to many of them being unable to reach the police stations for duty on time.

RECORD POLLING IN FIRST PHASE

In the first phase of panchayat elections, votes were cast in Ujjain and Barnagar janpad panchayats on Saturday.

In Ujjain district, 84.97 per cent votes had been cast in the polling that lasted till 3 pm. Among them, the number of women was higher than that of the last elections. A total of 83.04 per cent women exercised their voting right in the panchayat elections, while 86.83 percent men cast their votes. Counting of votes was started at the polling booths immediately after the voting. The results were, however, not made available to the media till the news was filed.
