Indore:– IV constituency is a happy hunting ground for the BJP and the Gaud family. For the last two decades, the Gaud family has been representing this constituency. Malini Gaud, widow of BJP heavyweight Laxman Singh Gaud, is a sitting MLA from here.
Generally dubbed as constituency of literate people, Indore- IV has a significant number of rich and middle income families belonging to Sindhi, Brahmin and Vishya communities. Like other segments, votes may be cast on caste basis here too but the decisive card is being held by the business community people, who come from all religions.
They are the ones who decide fate of the candidate. For many years, this constituency was a bastion of the Congress. But in 1990, the BJP breached the Congress citadel when Kailash Vijayvargiya defeated Iqbal Khan. In the following election held in 1993, Kailash moved to Indore- II constituency, so the BJP fielded Laxman Singh Gaud from Indore- IV on the recommendation of the RSS, which is very active here.
Gaud won the election and improved his victory margins in the next two Assembly elections. His sudden demise in a road mishap in 2008 brought his widow, Malini Gaud, to politics. She contested and won the last Assembly election due to ‘ sympathy’ wave. Now, she is up for the November 25 polls but anti- incumbency factor is looming large.
Though Malini worked in the constituency, she could not prove true to the expectations of the voters. Even as Malini’s opponents dubbed her ‘ ineffective’ leader during the entire term, her son Eklavya managed to carve a space for himself in the party and create the vote base in the constituency.
So people see home in Eklayva not in her mother, as Eklayva has all the qualities of his father, who was a pro- active leader.
Thinking in the long term, the electorate might retain her so that Eklavya gets a safe seat to contest the next Assembly election.
So far the Congress is concerned, the party is pondering over the names of Suresh Minda and Surjeet Singh Chhadha, both businessman for ticket.
State Women Congress president Archana Jaishwal is also seeking ticket from this constituency. Take note, Indore- IV is the only constituency in the district having a woman as its representative.
