Tainted docs to head ethical committee

Indore: The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College ( MGM) administration has appointed a doctor, who was banned for six months due to his involvement in illegal drug trials, as secretary of the Ethics and Scientific Review Committee.

Two others, who are also ‘ accused’ in unethical drug trial cases, have been appointed as members of the panel. The committee is investigating role of M Hospital doctors in illegal drug trials. Appointment of a tainted doctor in the ethics committee raises eyebrows over ‘ impartial’ investigation.

According to sources, Dr Ashish Patel has been appointed as secretary of Ethics Committee and Dr Anil Bharani and Dr Salil Bhargava as the members of the panel. It’s to be noted that these doctors of the Ethics Committee were involved in drug trials. Appointments of these doctors have surprised one and all. Many members have even expressed their ignorance over the fresh appointment and said that they were not consulted before the appointment by College Dean, Dr Pushpa Verma.

Sources further said that Dr Patel is quite junior to other existing members of the panel and his appointment surprises one and all. Doubt over probe by Ethics Committee People raise eyebrows over proper investigation by the Ethics Committee headed by Dr Ashish Patel.

When contacted, whistleblower Dr Anand Rai said that several members of the committee had been involved in the drug trials and how could they investigate against themselves ‘ impartially’. “ We have even raised the matter in the Supreme Court that the doctors, who were involved in drug trials, should not be appointed in the committee.

Now, the State Government should take the rights of constituting the committee so that impartial investigation could be done,” Dr Rai said.
