Indore : “ In the last decade, the consumption of intoxicants in the state has gone up.

Recently, a survey report revealed that the state stood in second position after Harynana. Various intoxicants being made from opium is being distributed from slums to posh colonies with the connivance of police. Knowing all these issues, the state government is not taking any necessary steps to control or stop this,” said state Congress vice president and former MP Laxman Singh during a programme organised at the Gandhi Bhavan here on Tuesday.

Singh, who is on five- day state tour, said that opium must be used as medicine.

He also demanded to reopen the closed de- addiction centres.

He said that the Congress has received suggestions and on that basis the party is undertaking the ‘ Nashmukti Abhiyan’. He said the habitual consumption of intoxicants is not only destroying the future of the youth brigade but also affecting the state and country in various economic ways.

Commenting on the recently held Global Investors Summit, he said whenever Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan finds his position in trouble, he comes up with an Investors Summit.

He openly extended a challenge to Shivraj Singh Chauhan and other senior leader of the BJP for an open debate on issues like corruption and drugs.

Singh said that after completing his five- day tour, a state- level public campaign would be initiated.

He urged all the members of the Congress committee to undertake a doorto- door campaign to spread awareness on drug consumptions.
