Social Media: A boon or bane for Armed Forces?

Mhow : On November 6, 2015, a combat debate on ‘Social Media: A boon or bane for the Armed Forces? was held at Army War College, Mhow’. The Combat Debate is an annual event of the Army War College where topic of interest is debated for mutual enhancement of professional knowledge. Eminent speakers as relevant to the motion for the debate are a part of the debating panel.

Social media has rapidly evolved over past few years and has become a dominant play in our everyday lives. Armed forces and its personnel too have been affected by this transformation. Social media in the coming years may also have an increase role to play in perception management both during active operations and in the existing situation of ‘No War No Peace’.

Lt Gen SL Narasimhan, Commandant Army War College presided over the event. Senior Army officers Maj Gen PM Cariappa; Maj Gen Neeraj Bali and Lt Gen SA Hasnain (Retd); Col Sumer De Cunha; and leading journalist Mr Manu Pubby and Brig AS Chauhan debated on the issue during the event. The debate was moderated by DrVidya Shankar Aiyar, a prominent media personality and nuclear disarmament specialist.

The event was attended by a number officers and ladies. The debate generated a lively discussion on the topical issue of Social media and its impact on everyday people and the Armed Forces.
