Indore : Indian consignments reach the foreign customers in and around one month where as China, a major competitor, take only 15 days. This huge difference in time is affecting growth of narrow fabrics,’ says Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of Kohinoor Elastics Pvt Ltd, Indore Rajendra Matlani to this correspondent in an exclusive interview.

He said Indian companies have required potential to expand global market like Chinese companies.

Pologround-based Kohinoor Elastics is one of the leading manufacturers of narrow woven fabrics (elastics, broadly used in underwear and sportswear) in India. Matlani, whose unit was recently given ‘Best SME of India Award’ in Mumbai by Union Minister Kalraj Mishra and Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, says that Indian products are best in terms of quality but the Indian companies do not have facility to reach out global customers in a shot time, thus hindering our export potential.

Matlani said: Units like us use to dispatch consignment via rail from Indore to Mumbai, then the consignment waits for vessel at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust Mumbai (JNPT).’ ‘We don’t have frequent vessels for those countries where India has lesser quantum of exports. Matlani cites the examples of his own unit which has large chunk of export to Bangladesh, a neighboring country and also the emerging hub of readymade garments in Asia, but we don’t have frequent vessels for Bangladesh.

What could be the solution? ‘Just, Indian Government should enhance marketing of our products in the world market and at the world forums, which would help in enhancing export. Frequency of vessels needs to be increased at Indian ports, which will ultimately help to exporters, said Matlani.

He further said that there is no challenge or hurdle before narrow fabric units in India, except the above. Perhaps this is the only sector which does not complain for raw materials or issues related to taxation. Matlani said: ‘We don’t have issue of raw material or taxation. We use to import the spandex (a sort of rubber) from Malaysia, but we face export problem only.

It may be noted that there are three narrow fabrics manufacturing units in MP and all are in Indore and Kohinoor Elastics, founded in 1989 by Rajendra Matlani, is the leader. It is one of the most trusted suppliers of Narrow Woven Fabrics.
