Indore : Large number of patients bore the brunt as nearly 3000 chemist shops in the district were shut on Wednesday due to the nationwide strike called by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) to protest against the online sale of drugs.

Patients faced difficulties in getting emergency medicines and a large number of people had to go hunting for shops to get the necessary drugs.

However, District Administration tried to provide emergency medicines to people through Red Cross Society’s Arogya Centre but it was like a drop in the ocean.

“Every chemist shop of the city was shut. However, we allowed 10 percent shops, inside hospitals, to remain open to avoid any difficulty to patients. All our retail chemists have joined the strike and over 3,000 chemists in the district participated in the strike,” president of Indore Chemist and Druggist Association Vinay Bakliwal said.

He said that it was a loss of hundreds of crores of rupees for the pharmacy industry on the one-day strike.

“The strike was called by our umbrella organisation AIOCD and it may also turn into an indefinite strike if the government fails to address the issue within a week and ban online sale of medicines. We will follow the call of our organisation to join the protest for a bigger cause,” Bakliwal added.

It is to be noted that the AIOCD protested against the Central government’s move to regularise sale of medicines on the internet through e-pharmacy.
