Indore : A 73-year-old lady was successfully operated using Zimmer’s revolutionary technology called i-Assist by Dr. Sunil Rajan of Synergy Hospital here on Friday.

Dr. Sunil Rajan said that the patient, Rabab Bai Bohra, a resident of Khargone was suffering from a complex knee problem for the past 10 years.

After successfully performing the path breaking surgery, Dr. Sunil Rajan said, “Problems related with knee are on the rise and patients are opting for knee replacement surgery. However, the appropriate positioning of the knee joint remains the major concern for surgeons. With help of advanced technology like i-Assist surgeons are now able to position the components of the knee implant correctly. Correct positioning of the components of the knee implant, limb alignment and balancing of the soft tissues are crucial to the subsequent recovery of a fully functional and durable knee joint. It also ensures that the weight is transmitted from the centre of the femoral head down through the centre of the knee joint and then to the centre of the ankle.”

i-Assist system is a computer assisted stereotaxic surgical instrument system to assist a surgeon in the positioning of orthopaedic implant system component intra-operatively.

Dr. Rajan also added “When navigational aids were used, 85% of the implanted knee joints had ‘ideal’ or ‘very good’ alignment, compared with 55% of the implanted knee joints that were fitted with traditional mechanical instrumentation. The technology now is not just confined to big metro cities, but is also being used in Tier-II cities like Indore.” Zimmer i-assist Knee is an advanced surgical guidance system engineered to improve the accuracy and alignment of total knee replacement surgery.

Zimmer iASSIST Knee helps to assist the surgeon in precisely aligning knee implants to each patient’s unique anatomy, providing a personalized fit and a truly tailored total knee replacement.
